The families of two Australian men who died in a fire that broke out in a cramped refugee detention centre in Papua New Guinea have launched the campaign ‘Safe Manus’.
An estimated 554 papronxeople died in the tragedy at the Manus Island detention centre on April 30.
Two Australian men died in the blaze at Nauru and a third died while on a boat that made it out of Papua New Guinea.
The families also want details of the complaint to be sent to Indonesian President Joko Widodo before the release of the asylum seekers who were held on Manus.
One Australian man was found dead in a holding cell in January, another died in November and a third died in January.
The four people found dead in the fire on Wednesday were: a 45-year-old man, a 53-year-old man, a 40-year-old man, a 22-year-old man and a 24-year-old man.
“My family was very distressed because of the way these people died,” one of the asylum seekers, who wanted to remain anonymous, said.
“It was the first time for me to think about something like this in my lifetime.”
